Clinical Rotations

Back To MPCA Programs

Clinical rotations are available to advanced health professions students from accredited training programs. Students and residents with an interest in rural, community-based primary care will benefit most from this SEARCH program. SEARCH is an acronym for Student/Resident Experiences And Rotations in Community Health, a program initiated in 1994 and funded through the National Health Service Corps. Nationwide applicants are accepted, with special consideration given to NHSC Scholars, students in Maine-based training programs, Maine students fulfilling Access to Medical Education Program requirements and other Maine residents.

Participants in clinical rotations are precepted by experienced and dedicated family practice or other primary care physicians, family nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or other clinicians at the sites.

Medical, FNP, PA, Dental and Mental Health/Behavioral Health students seeking primary care rotations for credit may apply for clinical rotations September through May.

Care Management Project

A culturally sensitive care management project is required of participants. This typically involves getting to know a patient and their family to learn how care is provided in light of challenges created by rural poverty, geographic isolation, and cultural beliefs about health. In addition, students participate in various community health events that demonstrate the close integration of rural primary care with community life. One-day rotations at one of Maine's family practice residencies may also be arranged for medical students.

Housing and Stipends

SEARCH arranges low-cost housing within a reasonable driving distance from sites, often in the home of a community member. A stipend is provided for students to defray the cost of housing, travel and living expenses.

Due to the realities of rural living, participants must have an automobile. There is no public transportation, and the great distances required for hospital rounds, home visits, and other project activities require independent transportation.

How to Apply

Applications for clinical placements should be submitted at least four months prior to the desired start date. Acceptance is determined in part by the degree of an applicant's interest in rural primary care, and plans to practice in an underserved area. Priority consideration is given to NHSC scholarship recipients as well as students fulfilling Maine Access to Medical Education obligations, students at Maine training programs and other Maine residents.

A completed application, resume and one-page biographical sketch are required for clinical rotations. All students are expected to supply proof of liability coverage, personal health insurance, and an updated immunization record before beginning their rotation. Some sites also require a letter of Good Standing.
